Whitehorse, YT – The Yukon government has paused the planned expansion of its Extended Producer Responsibility program, fulfilling an election promise made during last fall’s campaign.
The expansion, which was set to take effect this month, would have required producers to take responsibility for recycling hazardous and special waste such as paints and solvents. It was the fourth phase of the EPR rollout, which began in June 2025.
Environment Minister Wade Istchenko says the pause will give the government more time to consult with businesses and other stakeholders.
Existing EPR programs for batteries, automotive products, and paper and packaging will continue, including curbside collection and public drop-off services.
Household hazardous waste will still be accepted at local facilities, while commercial hazardous waste will continue to be handled by licensed private operators.
The hazardous and special waste program is not expected to launch before Aug. 1, 2026.
