Whitehorse, YT – There will be no Yukon Quest sled dog race this year.
In a Facebook post published yesterday, a volunteer board that took over the event in June 2025 says it inherited more than $30,000 in debt from the previous organization, making it difficult to restart the race.
The board says the debt restricted fundraising options, including the ability to run raffles. Internal divisions also emerged over the race route and they say that the Canadian Rangers declined to prepare a Yukon River route because of concerns about thin ice.
While territorial funding was available, board members say accessing it required detailed marketing plans, budgets and cash-flow projections which they didn’t have. They say hiring a professional to complete the paperwork was not feasible due to the existing debt.
Board members gradually stepped away, leaving the organization inactive.
CKRW attempted to reach out to race organizers before the announcement but did not hear back in time for publication.
