Whitehorse, YT – City of Whitehorse officials are warning residents that milder temperatures later this week could make for slippery road conditions.
Environment Canada forecasts a high of 7°C on Friday before cooling off again early next week. The warm weather follows a period of extreme cold and 52 centimetres of recorded snowfall by late December.
City officials say the melting and refreezing is expected to make road conditions slippery and messy, while Travis Whiting, the city’s director of operations, told council that crews are monitoring the weather closely.
“We’re going to expect to see some challenging road conditions, and the city will be out there to full force, working with our contracted teams as well to stay ahead of it.”
City officials say they have a healthy stock of salt and sand and are urging drivers to slow down and drive to the conditions.
