Whitehorse, YT – Air North saw a surge in calls from Yukon travellers over the weekend as many worked to adjust flights cancelled due to disruptions in Mexico.
Maria Kostaras, Air North’s director of marketing and communications, estimates about 100 customers reached out for help with connecting flights, though it’s unclear how many Yukoners remain stranded.
“It is hard to say with the amount, because we also don’t know how many people are snowbirds, and have maybe been there since the start of winter,” said Kostaras. “So it’s hard to actually gauge how many travellers are affected that are from the Yukon.”
Flights are restarting from the region, and although Air North doesn’t fly to Mexico, the airline is assisting passengers connecting through its hubs.
“If they could get to one of our hubs, so Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver, Kelowna, even with another carrier, then we just make sure that we change their flight and offer them no change fees or difference in fare if they had to come back up to the Yukon,” said Kostaras.
The disruptions followed violent outbreaks in more than two dozen Mexican states after the death of a cartel leader. Global Affairs Canada says more than 26,000 Canadians are currently in Mexico.
