Whitehorse, YT – Three possible locations are being considered for a new École Whitehorse Elementary School as the Yukon government launches a public survey on the project.
The options are to rebuild on the current downtown site, develop Lot 435 in Kopper King, or build on an unsurveyed parcel across from the Canada Games Centre.
The consultation follows the Yukon Party government’s decision to scrap earlier plans to construct the school on the Takhini Educational Land Reserve, a site chosen by the previous Liberal government. That site faced opposition from some residents who raised concerns about traffic, safety, and the loss of green space.
Education Minister Scott Kent said selecting the right location is an important decision for families and the broader community, and public input will help guide the final choice.
The existing school, built in 1950, is the oldest operating school in Yukon and has been identified as a priority for replacement. The government says renovating it would cost about 1.4 times more than building new and the aging facility no longer meets modern standards for capacity and accessibility.
The online survey is open until April 26. Public information sessions will be held in Whitehorse from March 24 to 26, and a summary of feedback is expected in June.
