Whitehorse, YT – Electricity bills are going up today for most Yukon households, with a typical home seeing an increase of about $80 a month.
The hike comes as two territorial rebates, the Winter Electrical Affordability Rebate and the Affordability Rate Relief Rebate, end, and as Yukon Energy begins planned rate increases as part of a 34 per cent rise over three years.
Yukon Energy says the money is needed to fund key projects, including the Whitehorse grid-scale battery energy storage system and replacing aging diesel units.
To help households cope, the Yukon government has set aside $13 million for a new Affordability Rate Relief program. Further program details are expected in the coming weeks.
