Whitehorse, YT – A group of Yukoners is calling on the territorial government to respect the results of last fall’s vote on electoral reform and move toward a ranked ballot system.
In an April 14 letter to Premier Currie Dixon, members of the Citizens’ Assembly on Electoral Reform say ranked ballots would help reduce vote-splitting and better reflect voters’ preferences.
The call follows a plebiscite held alongside last fall’s territorial election, where about 56 per cent of voters supported changing the voting system from first-past-the-post. Just over half of eligible voters cast a ballot.
The result is non-binding, meaning the government is not required to act on it.
Premier Dixon has said he does not support changing the current system.
