Whitehorse, YT – The Yukon government says it is tightening oversight of mining following the 2024 Eagle Gold Mine failure.
An update this week outlines progress on 56 recommendations from an independent review that called for stronger rules and monitoring.
Officials say 23 recommendations are complete, six are underway and the rest are expected by spring 2027.
Steps so far include hiring more inspectors and technical experts, creating a new unit focused on major mines and strengthening enforcement. Some remaining changes will be built into updated mine waste guidelines now under review.
The Eagle Gold Mine suffered a heap leach failure in June 2024, spilling about two million tonnes of cyanide-laden ore.
