Whitehorse, YT – Wildfire crews plan prescribed grass burns near Watson Lake and Haines Junction this week to reduce wildfire risk.
Burning is expected between May 5 and 10, depending on weather, and smoke may be visible in the area.
In Watson Lake, crews will burn grass along highway corridors, with brief traffic delays possible. In Haines Junction, work will take place in a field north of the community.
Officials say the controlled burns are done in spring to remove dry grass and reduce the risk of more serious wildfires later in the season.
