Whitehorse, YT – Lightning sparked 21 new wildfires across Yukon over the long weekend, most of them in the Dawson area.
Wildland Fire Management says 15 of the fires are near Dawson, where six of 10 fires requiring full response are now under control or being held. The largest is a 25-hectare fire at Bertha Creek. Officials say no communities or critical infrastructure are at risk, though smoke may be visible in the area.
Near Carmacks, a 10-hectare fire north of the community is being held after crews worked to contain hot spots and establish a buffer around the blaze.
Officials say rain and cooler temperatures expected this week should help reduce fire activity, but lightning in the forecast means new starts remain possible.
