Whitehorse, YT – The Yukon Legislative Assembly has voted to bring representatives from three major electricity corporations before MLAs to answer questions about the territory’s electrical infrastructure and services.
Motion 161 passed Wednesday as amended. It calls for witnesses from ATCO Electric Yukon, Yukon Energy Corporation and Yukon Development Corporation to appear before the Assembly’s Committee of the Whole during the 2026 Fall Sitting.
The witnesses will be questioned about issues related to the territory’s electricity system.
The Yukon NDP says Energy Critic Lane Tredger brought forward a motion calling for ATCO Electric Yukon to appear before the Assembly. Tredger says the appearance will give Yukoners an opportunity to get answers about concerns with electricity billing. Yukon Party MLA Ted Laking proposed the amendment that added all three corporations to the motion.
Laking says the hearings will give MLAs an opportunity to ask questions about the stability and reliability of the electricity system as well as rates, infrastructure and investment. He says MLAs should be able to examine the territory’s ability to generate enough electricity to meet expected peak demand, as well as plans for the future of the electrical system.
The appearance of the three corporations is now included in the Assembly’s agenda for the fall sitting. The motion does not specify when the witnesses will appear or how long the questioning will last.
