The Mount MacIntyre Recreation Centre is set to receive $9.3 million to improve energy efficiency and upgrade its ventilation system
WHITEHORSE – The Mount McIntyre Recreation Centre in Whitehorse is set to receive energy-efficient improvements and upgrades to its ventilation system.
The governments of Canada and Yukon are investing in the Mount McIntyre Recreation Centre to upgrade and improve energy efficiency. Yukon MP Brendan Hanley and Yukon Minister of Community Services Richard Mostyn announced a combined $9.3 million investment to make these improvements.
Work will include the installation of a new high-efficiency energy system and Energy Recovery Ventilation unit, along with upgrades to the facility’s ventilation, air filtering systems, and the roof. New cladding, LED lighting, triple panel windows, and new doors are on the to-do list.
In total, the improvements will see the facility’s energy efficiency rate jump to 91%, while reducing costs and greenhouse gas emissions.
Community Services Minister Richard Mostyn says this project will join the 26 other Green Infrastructure initiatives.
“Coming together in places like this where we’re physically active, we’re working together sharing memories. Sharing experiences is absolutely critical, especially in a place where 10 months of the year we have winter, so Mount Mac is no exception to any of this. Today we’re pleased to announce a significant investment in upgrading this community landmark. Our government is proud to invest more than $1.8 million towards these upgrades and we’re grateful to have the Government of Canada as a partner”
Yukon MP Brendan Hanley says these improvements will help the territory meet carbon emission targets.
“The Mount MacIntyre Recreation Centre’s upgrades will not only support quality recreation facilities but its green technology upgrades will reduce energy use and help us lower carbon emissions. Our government’s investment in Mount MacIntyre will ensure that the City of Whitehorse can continue hosting world-class sporting events and provide people of all ages a modern space that is better for our environment.”
Construction is set to start next April and last until December 2025, which means the centre will be closed however, ski clubs are planned to resume while work gets done.
