The Yukon Government pledges $4.35 million of support for the Arctic Winter Games bid in 2026
WHITEHORSE- Financial support from the Yukon Government has been announced for the 2026 Arctic Winter Games bid.
The Government of Yukon is committing $4.35 million for the event, which is set to be hosted in Whitehorse in 2026.
Going forward, the Yukon Government will work with the City of Whitehorse and territory sports organizations to define roles and duties in order to guarantee a successful event.
According to the territorial government, Whitehorse has an established track record of holding national and international level games, demonstrating its ability to be a world-class sports city.
The International Arctic Winter Games Committee prohibited Russia from hosting the 2026 AWG in protest of Russia’s violent and unjustified actions against Ukraine. The Yukon Government states they firmly condemn Russia’s actions in Ukraine and are glad to be able to step up and help circumpolar athletes during a global crisis.
The games will offer an opportunity for Yukoners to have access to international sports after the 2020 games were canceled due to the pandemic.
No new infrastructure is required to host the Games, as the existing facilities meet the requirements of the Arctic Winter Games International Committee.
