Evacuation order was rescinded by Wildland Fire, allowing residents of Mayo to return home
MAYO – After firefighting personnel’s efforts, residents of Mayo can now return home.
The Village of Mayo and the Na-Cho Nyak Dun First Nation residents announced a ‘return to community procedure’, as the evacuation order was removed.
On August 13, 2023, at 1:30 p.m., the Yukon Protective Services took away the evac order and reopened the Silver Trail.
Na-Cho Nyak Dun Chief Hope showed her gratitude.
““I would like to extend once again a huge thank you to Kwanlin Dün First Nation and everyone who came out to our assistance during this time. In the coming days we’ll be sharing more gratitude to the many fire crew, organizations, and people who came out to support us. Safe travels to all of our community members and a reminder to drive safely.”
The fire is still active but, no buildings or properties were damaged in the community.
Crews are still present and working throughout the neighbourhood. This fire drew 15 personnel from all around Canada, including Saskatchewan, Ontario, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland. Expect to see 11 teams throughout town as the firefighting effort continues over the next several weeks.
Na-Cho Nyak Dun advises Yukoners driving back to Mayo to hold on to their receipts and if they require further support, to contact McGarry Selbee, Acting Executive Director of the Na-Cho Nyak Dun.
