The Yukon NDP has registered as an intervener in the review process to speak out against ATCO’s proposed rate increases
YUKON – The New Democratic Party for the territory has spoken and looks to hear Yukoners to have their say on ATCO’s proposed rate increase.
On Friday, August 11, 2023, the Yukon NDP registered as an intervener in ATCO’s rate review process. This will allow the NDP and Yukoners to speak out against ATCO’s rate increase proposal.
ATCO is looking to increase its electric rate by 3.3% for the rest of 2023 and by 10% in 2024.
NDP MLA for Whitehorse Centre Lane Tredger had more to say the Liberals have yet to respond to this increase.
“Right now the Liberals are doing nothing about this as far as I can tell, they’re really failing to protect Yukoners. They’re failing to protect small businesses. And they bring up small businesses because their small businesses are still really hurting from the pandemic. If this increase goes ahead, that’s taking money out of the pockets of our small local businesses and giving it to a corporation from Alberta that’s been making millions since 2016.”
Tredger states that this is unjustified.
“A real increase just isn’t justified when they’re already making millions on top of the millions that they’re allowed to make, they’ve been making excess profits for years and that’s not fair to Yukoners. That’s not what’s supposed to happen so there’s no reason to increase the rates.”
The NDP will be taking some time over the next few weeks to talk to business owners and residents on the issue to try and stir up more support and awareness.
