WHITEHORSE, YT – On Sunday, November 19th, the Jewish and Muslim communities of Whitehorse will be coming together inside Lewis Hall at the Whitehorse United Church for a fundraiser in the name of peace and humanity. It’s an afternoon of music and food to raise funds for Humanitarian relief for people in Gaza, and it’s jointly hosted by both the Jewish and Muslim communities of Whitehorse, with the support of the Whitehorse United Church.
The event is the brainchild of Israr Ahmed, a member of the local Muslim community, who contacted Rick Karp, the President of the Jewish Cultural Society of the Yukon, with the concept of coming together to support humanitarian efforts, while at the same time taking a united stance against antisemitism and islamophobia
“The idea sparked in my head to try and do something, the least that we can to alleviate the suffering of the people in Palestine and Gaza, and I thought, well, you know, it’s also unfortunately, looking at the spate of Islamophobic and antisemitic incidents happening across the country. There was a pressing need for us to come together to express and show that solidarity, and that unity that whatever may be happening… we cannot allow that hate to disturb the peace here in our communities. We cannot allow politics to to spoil the peace.” Israr Ahmed – Member of the Whitehorse Muslim community
There is a $25 cover charge at the doors for the event, with all the proceeds to be donated to the International Federation of the Red Cross & Red Crescent to support humanitarian relief for people in Gaza. The event runs from 1pm until 4pm.
