WHITEHORSE, YT – The Yukon Fire Marshall’s Office has concluded it’s investigation into the Ibex Valley Wildfire.
The Fire Marshall’s Office has concluded the wildfire was human caused, and accidental. It was ignited by exploding targets being used for target practice by two individuals in the area. The fire quickly spread thanks to the hot, dry, and windy weather. The two individuals remained on scene and attempted to extinguish the fire themselves, when they were unsuccessful they called 911.
The investigation found no evidence of criminal or unlawful activities, and no charges have been laid by the RCMP. The names of the individuals involved will not be released.
Yukon’s Fire Marshall Devin Bailey has thanked everyone involved for their cooperation and says he’s hopeful the lessons learned from this incident will prevent similar events like it in the future. He adds that the public should avoid the use of exploding targets during the wildfire season, keep a close eye on local conditions, and should always be prepared to extinguish any accidental spread of fire.
