WHITEHORSE, YT – A proposed mining road in central Yukon has hit a speedbump. A review of the Casino-Rude Road Construction Project by the Yukon Environmental and Socio-Economic Assessment Board has led to a recommendation against the construction.
The project hoped to add 2.7 kilometers of access road and upgrade over 11 kilometers of existing road to support TMM Goldcorp Inc’s placer mining and exploration in an area roughly 100 kilometers west of Pelly Crossing, within the traditional territory of the Selkirk and White River First Nations.
The Mayo Branch of YESAB says that the proposed road would overlap with areas where the Casino Mining Corporation is looking for minerals such as quartz, and would interfere with local trapping, and the resident caribou herd.
The recommendation was made on December 27th for further consideration by the decision making body.
