WHITEHORSE, YT – Bell Canada President Mirko Bibic has responded to a letter sent by Premier Ranj Pillai in an attempt to get to the bottom of why cellphone service in the Yukon has been so unreliable in recent weeks.
Bibic says that an internal investigation into the root cause of the intermittent cell service interruptions had reveled network congestion, due in part to increased usage. The investigation determined this congestion has been compounded by localized disruptions caused by upgrades to telecommunications infrastructure in the Territory.
Bibic clarified that these upgrades are part of $22 million dollar investment over three years to expand 4G and 5G service across the Yukon. He adds that once complete, these upgrades will improve network speed, reliability, and capacity.
Bell Canada says they will be monitoring the situation going forward to ensure these issues do no re-emerge.
