Whitehorse, YT – The mercury soared to new heights this week, breaking heat records across the North.
On August 8th, Fort Good Hope, N.W.T., reached a blistering 36.2°C. The old record was just over 31°C in 2013.
Not to be outdone, Inuvik broke their previous record by four degrees with 34.2°C.
The Fort McPherson area reached a record-breaking 34.9°C on Tuesday and tied it again on Wednesday.
According to Environment Canada, many other communities including Deline, Norman Wells and Tuktoyaktuk also broke or tied heat records this week.
Earlier this week heat warnings and special weather statements were issued for swaths of the Northwest Territories and the Yukon.
This week’s temperatures across the Yukon ranged between 6 and 12 degrees above seasonal normals.
