Whitehorse, YT – The Yukon Party is calling on the territorial government to work with Ottawa to make carbon tax rebates for small businesses and placer miners non-taxable.
This follows a recent decision by the federal government to make carbon tax rebates for small businesses tax-free.
Premier Ranj Pillai stated that under federal tax law, rebates are taxable unless an exception is made.
“A tax on a rebate just does not make sense,” said Kluane MLA Wade Istchenko in a Yukon Party press release. “For the sake of small businesses and placer miners, I hope the territorial government will seek an exemption for the Yukon before the next tax season rolls around in the Spring.”
The Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB), which represents over 150 Yukon businesses has also called for the rebates to be tax-free. The CFIB has written to the federal government asking them to work with the Yukon.
CKRW reached out to the Yukon Government for comment.
