WHITEHORSE, YT – The Whitehorse RCMP is warning the public of a recently reported instance of a Yukoner receiving an extortion email that appeared to be from the RCMP.
RCMP say the email was styled in such a way so that it appeared to be a legitimate legal document, adding it was titled in the same way something like a subpoena would be.
The email leveled serious accusations at the recipient, and had requested that they respond to criminal charges laid against them via email.
The RCMP notes that they will never demand payment or threaten an arrest via email, and have reminded the public to be wary of emails of this nature, even if the message contains the RCMP crest or Government Logos.
More information on fraud and fraud prevention can be found on the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre’s website.
If you feel you’ve been targeted by, or fell victim to a scam, The RCMP has asked that you report it to the Canadian Anti Fraud Centre. They also recommend contacting your local RCMP detachment to file a report if you’ve been victimized.
