Whitehorse, YT – The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has approved a new subsidy aimed at reducing internet costs in the Far North and is now looking for public input on how to roll it out.
With many residents in the Far North struggling to afford internet access, the CRTC is looking for feedback on how best to roll out this subsidy, which will provide a uniform monthly discount to eligible households and small businesses.
The public consultation focuses on several key aspects, including eligibility criteria for small businesses and community institutions, determining the subsidy amount, and exploring the role of third parties in the program’s rollout.
Additionally, the CRTC is seeking input on how to ensure transparency, accountability, and effective distribution of the funds.
The CRTC states that they are particularly eager to hear from Indigenous communities as the program could have a significant impact on access to affordable internet in remote areas.
Public input can be provided through written submissions to the CRTC by February 18th.
Further details are available on the commission’s consultation page.
