UPDATE: RCMP stated that the British Columbia RCMP Under Water Recovery Team was able to locate the missing person from the vehicle late in the afternoon of January 26th.
An investigation is still ongoing and police say no further information about the deceased will be released.
Whitehorse, YT – A vehicle carrying three people broke through the ice and sank in Lake Laberge early on January 25th leaving one person unaccounted for.
Whitehorse RCMP, Fire Department and Yukon EMS responded to a report at 1:06 am on Saturday. According to police, two vehicles were being used for ice fishing when one drove into open water. Two individuals escaped safely but one remains missing.
The Yukon Coroner’s Service is assisting the investigation, and a recovery operation, expected to take several days, will involve the BC RCMP Underwater Recovery Team.
Authorities urge the public to avoid the area while recovery efforts are underway.
“Our thoughts are with the family and all those affected by this tragic event,” reads an RCMP statement.
