Whitehorse, YT – Whitehorse General Hospital (WGH) is again facing issues with residue on surgical instruments, just days after declaring the problem resolved.
Despite initial testing indicating a fix, the issue has reappeared, prompting ongoing troubleshooting with experts and technicians.
Emergency capacity is being maintained and most scheduled surgeries today and tomorrow will proceed, except for ear, nose, and throat procedures.
Cancer-related surgeries remain a priority, with other procedures scheduled based on available instruments.
To mitigate disruptions, the hospital has partnered with Vancouver General Hospital to secure a supply of sterilized instruments.
On February 3rd, Yukon Hospitals first announced surgical cancellations due to sterilization issues, affecting 25 to 30 procedures daily that week.
Yukon Hospitals says that a full analysis is underway to determine the cause and find long-term solutions.
