WHITEHORSE, YT – The Yukon Government’s Water Resources Branch has released the March 1st Snow Survey, revealing lower than average snowpack in the southern Yukon, and above average in the Klondike.
More specifically, the survey found that snowpack of the Lower Yukon River basin around Dawson and the Klondike is sitting at 130% of the historical median, the Central Yukon River basin near Carmacks is at 112% of the historical median, the Teslin, Stewart, Peel, Alsek, White, Porcupine and Pelly basins are close to average, and the Liard and Upper Yukon basins around the Southern Lakes and Whitehorse are below average.
Based on these results, the Government is predicting freshet flows near or below average and low flood potential for most of the territory, with the typical freshet flows and above average flood potential expected for communities in the Klondike.
