Whitehorse, YT – Yukon Wildfire Management says more wildfires are likely in the coming days after a series of lightning storms swept through the territory.
Crews are already responding to several new fires, including the out-of-control Crosby Creek fire discovered around 7 p.m. Monday. It’s roughly 15 hectares in size as of Tuesday afternoon and is about one kilometre from Pelly Farm Road where crews and heavy machinery are responding. Residents are asked to avoid the area.
Two airtanker groups have been dropping retardant around the fire, with support from helicopters and ground crews.
Monday also saw a small human-caused fire in the Wolf Creek area, which was reported around 2:30 p.m. and declared out two hours later.
Another lightning-caused fire, DA-002, was quickly brought under control Monday night after being detected through lightning tracking. It burned just 0.3 hectares.
Crews are patrolling by air to spot any new starts.
