Whitehorse, YT – Mike Pemberton has been elected leader of the Yukon Liberal Party and will become the territory’s 11th premier.
Pemberton narrowly defeated former Kwanlin Dun First Nation chief Doris Bill by just 13 votes in a leadership vote held June 19 at the Sternwheeler Hotel in Whitehorse. A total of 873 ballots were cast, with 442 for Pemberton, 429 for Bill, and two spoiled.
In his victory speech, Pemberton called the result an opportunity to build on the party’s record, pledging to work with all Yukoners to tackle the challenges ahead. He promised to focus on public safety, affordability and reconciliation with First Nations.
This is our opportunity. This is our challenge. This is our moment. We have one job to do,” said Pemberton to the crowd. “Let’s build upon the foundation of leadership and strength. Let’s build our team and build a strong path forward. And friends working together, let’s build a strong future for all Yukoners.”
Pemberton will replace outgoing Premier Ranj Pillai who announced he would not be seeking re-election.
A territorial election will occur by Nov 3.
