Whitehorse, YT – Whitehorse RCMP are warning local businesses about a rise in phishing scams that aim to divert invoice payments.
Police say fraudsters are posing as legitimate service providers and emailing businesses with requests to update banking or payment details. The messages often look convincing, using real logos and professional-looking language.
Mounties urge businesses to verify any request to change payment information by contacting the company directly using a trusted phone number or email. They also recommend double-checking sender addresses for subtle misspellings and avoiding reliance on email alone when confirming financial details.
Suspicious emails should be reported to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre and the RCMP. Officers say anyone who believes they may have sent money to a fraudulent account is asked to contact the Whitehorse RCMP.
