Whitehorse, YT – Dawson residents may soon be able to cross the Yukon River again as ice has begun forming at the ferry crossing site.
The Department of Highways and Public Works says crews plan to begin building the ice bridge in mid-December. A bridge for light-duty vehicles is expected to open by late December, while a route for heavy vehicles will likely be ready by mid-January.
The ice bridge provides a critical link between West Dawson and the main townsite. Last year, warm weather in the spring forced the bridge to close earlier than usual, while the winter before that, ice conditions prevented the bridge from being built.
Officials warn the public to stay off the ice until the bridge is officially open.
