Whitehorse, YT – Yukon’s police watchdog has released more details surrounding a fatal RCMP shooting south of Whitehorse last month.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team was called in after Mounties tried to arrest a man wanted on firearms warrants on Jan 27, south of Whitehorse.
Police say the man drove off before officers could move in. An emergency response team forced his vehicle into a snow-filled ditch and used chemical munitions and less-lethal rounds as he tried to free it.
Around 1 p.m., the man got out. Officers first used a less-lethal launcher, then fired their service weapons, wounding him. The man later died at the scene, and officers found an imitation firearm nearby.
ASIRT says the investigation is ongoing and is asking witnesses or anyone with video to come forward.
