Whitehorse, YT – Two cross-country skiers are safe after being airlifted from the Mount Arkell area near Whitehorse.
RCMP say a father and son triggered an SOS on a Garmin inReach device just after 2 p.m. on Mar. 23, after running into difficult terrain and realizing they didn’t have enough supplies to make it back.
Search and rescue crews coordinated a helicopter extraction the next day, bringing both back to Whitehorse without injury.
Mounties say the emergency device played a key role in the quick response, and are reminding people that heavy snowfall this winter is increasing the risks in the backcountry.
