Whitehorse, YT – Yukon residents can now access some diabetes medications and prescription contraceptives at little or no cost under a new pharmacare program that took effect yesterday.
The Yukon National Pharmacare Program provides first-dollar coverage for eligible drugs listed in the territory’s formulary, meaning the program pays upfront, including for residents with private insurance.
The program is part of a time-limited agreement with the federal government and is set to run until March 2029, with its future beyond that dependent on renewed funding.
The program is administered by Pacific Blue Cross, with claims processed at pharmacies.
To qualify, residents must have a valid Yukon health card and not be covered under certain federal programs. Some medications are subject to a lower-cost alternative policy, meaning only the least expensive version is fully covered.
