Whitehorse, YT – The operators of Dawson City’s Little Blue Daycare now have the land needed to move ahead with plans for a new facility, the Big Blue Daycare.
Last week, the Yukon government transferred an 880-square-metre parcel on 5th Avenue to the Dawson Society for Children and Families.
Society vice-president Brian Naef says the location is a strong fit for the project, partly because of its proximity to the existing daycare, which they hope could be used for after-school and summer programming.
“We were really interested in this one because it’s partially on the old McDonald Lodge site in Dawson and it’s close to our other establishment, or other daycare,” said Naef. “So hopefully in the future we will be able to share resources.”
The current Little Blue Daycare has space for 20 children and requires major repairs, while about 40 children are on the waitlist.
Construction is expected to begin as early as this fall, with the new facility slated to open by late summer next year.
