Whitehorse, YT – Wildland Fire Management crews are carrying out a series of prescribed burns around Whitehorse to reduce the wildfire risk ahead of the summer season.
A planned burn is set for Friday along Chadburn Lake Road in the Hidden Lakes area, following earlier burns this spring near Long Lake Road, Takhini North and Robert Service Way.
Additional sites are planned south of Porter Creek, along Mount Sima Road, Booth Road and the Whitehorse South Fuel Break, along with debris burning between Hamilton Boulevard and McLean Lake Road that may produce visible smoke.
Officials say the controlled burns target dry grass and forest litter under carefully monitored conditions to lower the risk of more severe wildfires later in the season.
