Dog mushers will swarm Shipyards Park as the Yukon Quest returns
YUKON – A Yukon tradition is back tomorrow as the Yukon Quest takes off from Whitehorse.
Dog mushers will swarm Shipyards Park tomorrow as the Yukon Quest returns.
This year’s race will end in Dawson City for only the second time in the race’s 38 year history.
16 Mushers with teams of up to 14 dogs are set to take off from Whitehorse on February 11, 2023, at 11 am.
In addition to the 402-kilometre Quest 250 to Pelly Crossing, five mushers will compete in the 160-kilometre Quest 100 to Braeburn this year.
Hope is still there from Alaskan officials to rekindle the relationship for next year.
The Quest’s Operations Manager, Hopkins Hill believes that the race must adapt to changes in both the environment and the economy, and he thinks that the prize money – $35,000 for the Dawson event — gives a significant financial incentive for contestants.
Officials added that the shorter race could help beginner mushers put up more competition and may be critical.
