Canada Goose and Air North bring materials and fabrics to Indigenous sewers, seamstresses and parka designers in the Yukon
YUKON – Indigenous sewers, seamstresses, parka designers, and others visited an event in Whitehorse put on by Air North and Canada Goose.
On December 9, 2022 Yukoners of all ages gathered at the Neighbourly North building in Whitehorse to get access to fabrics and materials. The partnership between Canada Goose and Air North will enable creators to make coats, mitts, and other pieces of clothing for themselves, friends, and family.
According to organizers of the event, Yukoners living in the communities are big supporters of the program. Debra Ryan who works in the Marketing Department for Air North says the project started a while ago.
“We initiated this project over five years ago and today is the first day or the first official Yukon Resource Centre whereby Canada Goose provides some fabric to Northern solar is they’ve been doing this since 2009 and have provided I believe, over a million meters to Eastern Arctic and central Arctic.”
Ryan went on to describe Air North’s crucial role in the initiative.
“Our part in this was flying the fabric from Vancouver to the Yukon and distributing it to the communities we fly to mail to Dawson City to Old Crow. In addition to hosting the Resource Centre here in Whitehorse, where a lot of communities have arranged rides and have driven in this morning from Haines junction and Carcross and Carmacks and so on, to take part in this”
First Nation Elders were given the opportunity to collect fabric and materials before the general public was given the chance later in the day.
