Jaymi Hinchey climbed to the podium to become the first Yukoner to ever earn a medal at the competition
YUKON – Yukon Judo history was in Edmonton as the territory made the podium for the first time.
During the 2022 Elite Canadian Judo Championships, Jaymi Hinchey became the first Judoka from the territory to reach the podium at the championships. The U18 competition brings together the top eight athletes from every weight class.
Hinchey managed to win one of two bronze medals in the under 52-kilogram division.
The young athlete, who has been practicing for nine years, had no clue she was the first Yukon judoka, male or female, to stand on the podium at the Elite Canadian Championships.
Hinchey had high praise for her teammates from the Shiroumakai Club in Whitehorse. Her two teammates made the trip to Edmonton to take in the event.
