Yukon Party motion on firearms passes with support of NDP
In a surprise turn of events early in the legislative session, a Yukon Party Official Opposition private members motion on firearms passed yesterday.
The NDP and Yukon Party MLAs all voted in favour of the motion.
All of the governing Liberals MLAs turned it down.
The motion calls for the Yukon government to ensure RCMP resources are not used to enforce the federal
government’s gun confiscation program.
Yukon Party Justice Critic Brad Cathers noted that it is important to ensure that police resources are not diverted from focusing on organized
crime and other serious public safety issues.
