The Whitehorse Safe at Home Society is looking to the City of Whitehorse for $1.7 million in funding to help keep the renovation work at the former Coast High Country Inn going
WHITEHORSE – The Whitehorse Safe at Home Society is looking to the City of Whitehorse for $1.7 million in funding.
The calls for financial aid come at a time when the society hopes to complete renovations. Members who advocate for the group say the renovations are costing more than first anticipated.
The project would see 56 supportive housing units.
During a Whitehorse City Council meeting on February 9, 2023, Executive Director Kate Mechan said the project has also seen delays.
“We’re requesting is in and around $1.7 million. Requests (like) that are of huge magnitude and I completely acknowledge and honour that.”
Mechan added that the society has not seen revenue come in yet.
“These unforeseen circumstances have caused undue hardship for our organization an organization who has followed all the appropriate channels to seek support have rigorously followed the professional advice of our Design Build Team regarding the building code and designing the building.”
Whitehorse council members directed municipal staff to look into the situation and come back with recommendations.
