Whitehorse City Council agrees to host the 2026 Arctic Winter Games, contingent on support from the Yukon Government
WHITEHORSE – City council members have agreed to host the 2026 Arctic Winter Games on a conditional basis.
The motion to proceed with the process was made during the regular council meeting on July 10, 2023, contingent mostly on support from the Yukon government.
The council provided unanimous support for the concept, with Mayor Laura Cabott one of those strongly in support of the project.
“I will be voting in favor of this, I think, for several reasons. And I started with the city, the city is well known as a sports city. We’re well known for being able to host this event and do it very, very well. And in fact, when we host this event history shows that we’re able to do it a little bit more in a less expensive way but in a highly successful way.”
Councillor Kirk Cameron also backed the agreement.
“To me, this is a big deal it’s great that we can do it and so I’m all supportive of this”
The preliminary budget for the event is $9.5 million.
