The semi-truck crash that closed a portion of the Alaska Highway was confirmed fatal by Whitehorse RCMP
YUKON – Authorities have confirmed the semi-truck that drove into the ditch yesterday on the Alaska Highway has resulted in a death.
On August 18, 2022, at approximately 8:56 a.m., Whitehorse RCMP responded to the report of a single-vehicle crash at kilometre 1386 on the Alaska Highway. The semi-truck had been traveling northbound on the Alaska Highway when it off the road and caught fire in a ditch, according to RCMP officers.
The semi-truck’s driver was a 39-year-old Alberta male and was pronounced dead at the scene. The vehicle’s passenger, a 59-year-old male from Alberta, sustained unspecified injuries.
Sixteen different agencies responded to this call, including paramedics from Yukon Emergency Medical Services, fire departments from Whitehorse, Whitehorse Airport, Marsh Lake, Golden Horn, and Mount Lorne, Yukon Carrier Compliance, Yukon Highway & Public Works, Yukon Coroner Service, and Atco Electric.
A Yukon RCMP Traffic Services crash reconstructionist responded to the site, and the inquiry is still underway in collaboration with the Yukon Government’s National Safety Code and Carrier Compliance. The Yukon Coroners Service is still investigating.
