Women's conference looks to support female entrepreneurs

(SMRT Pop Ups)

Two Whitehorse organizations are looking to bring more women into Yukon's entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Whitehorse's SMRT Pop Ups and CoSpace are partnering together to host a women's entrepreneurship conference later this month.

Along with the Victoria Faulkner Women's Centre, the 'New Year New You' conference brings together women starting their entrepreneurship journey and looking for guidance.

SMRT Pop ups co-founder Selene Vakharia says it's also to raise awareness about the different issues faced by women.

"Female entrepreneurs tend to have a higher level of doubt in their capabilities and a greater fear of failure than men do and so part of this conference is around training and skills development as well as boosting that confidence with a focus and recognition of skills that these women have."

Vakharia says Yukon is in a unique position where everyone is looking to help one another and she says the ecosystem gives every woman a chance to pursue her ideas and CoSpace's Lauren Manakin Beille says there's no shortage of inspiration.

"Whitehorse is full of ideas and what we've been missing as an ecosystem is a place where this conference is meeting a need. Essentially a place to safely share your idea, be supported in your idea, and understand the next steps."

The event already has a waitlist but both women say there are more similar events in the works.
